I got back Saturday night from a great road trip from Atlanta to the Rockies and back. Three guys in a big Dodge diesel pickup, with a trailer and three bikes. ~27 hours to drive out (drive, sleep, repeat), ~23:45 hours for the return trip, 1500 miles each way.

We unloaded the bikes in Fort Collins, then did a 7-day ~2000 mile loop through Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota. The Chief Joseph/Beartooth Highways are among the greatest riding I have ever had anywhere.

A BMW R1100RT isn't the greatest summer bike, but with low (10% humidity), it was more than tolerable, especially when the temperature dropped below 50°. With 7 gallons of gas on board, I pretty much could ignore gas stations. The BMW turned 123,000 miles on this trip, and feels like it has tens of thousands left in it, which may be more than I have, although this 70-year old was very pleased to be able to keep up with guys who were decades younger.

This is how I want to do my out west trip.

I've got 2 questions if you don't mind. What trailer did you use? Where did you store the bikes?

Looks like you had fun. Riding out there would probably add 5-6 days to the length of the trip, plus you would be wasted when you got there.

It wasn't my truck or trailer, but it was an aluminum trailer with room for 3 large bikes, could have easily fitted 4 dirt bikes. I rode to Alaska in 2006, and the midwest and great plains was a slog, Kansas in particular. All in all, I spent 2 weeks getting to Alaska, 2 weeks in Alaska, and another 2 weeks riding back. Much of the ride was boring (and hot).

By trailering and sharing expenses, we each saved money, as well as arriving at our destination fresh (to the extent you can be fresh after 27 hours in a pickup truck). The truck and trailer stayed with a family member in Fort Collins, while the three of us went off on the bikes for a week.

Don't fix it if it ain't broke, don't break it if you can't fix it.
