The XT is a good-looking machine.

BUT !!

Various thick goos I've used on my chain, advertised as -won't fling off-
flings off the chain, and then sticks tenaciously to the rear fork, wheel spokes, etc.

My bicycle mechanic, a master craftsman recommended that I use only silicone spray lube on my bicycle chain.
My 30 year old Schwinn had decades of crud buildup from the WD-40 I'd been using on it. So such change wouldn't show.

On my new Trek I've used only silicone spray.
I've got over a thousand miles on it, and the transmission still looks good.

I know silicone lube is light.
I imagine on a motorcycle it might need to be applied more often.

But I suspect it'd be a cleaner bike.

I may try it if I get a new XT.

note:
I've already been using silicone spray on the clutch cable, and various similar parts.
Seems good.
WD-40 is a good penetrant. But it's an excellent dirt magnet as well. Silicone spray doesn't do that.

I had the same problem with chain lube gunk all over the bike. I also had 2 chains that should have lasted 30k miles die in less than 10k. So I quit lubing the chain and solved both problems. A clean chain is a happy chain.

Bicycle chains and motorcycle chains are inherently different. Bicycle chains do need a light film of lube. Motorcycle chains have o-rings to keep the rollers lubricated and keep dirt out. There' no real need to apply any external lube. Greasing up the chain just gives dirt something to stick to. Just clean it every 500 miles or so (I use WD-40) and wipe off the excess.

I always use DID-428 O-ring chains. They are a durable chain and last a long time. Never lubed one yet.

Hi Guys n Gals,

I also refuse to use normal chain lube, and continue to keep 'em clean with WD-40.

I recommend the DID O-ring, and now X-ring chains and get 30k with ease.

As the weather conditions in the UK involve plenty of rain (even in Summer) then a regular coating of WD works wonders.

And before you ask, yes I still use it on my CCM.

I fitted a touring Scottoiler kit, cleans as it lubes as it goes. Magic innit. I fit them on all my bikes.

I installed an x chain and have not needed to adjust it in 7000 kms. I think even a x chain needs some external lub so as not to wear the sprockets. I use a spray wax and do not have any mess to clean up

My 10-year old can of Chainwax is almost empty, and I plan to order a can of this stuff: Dupont Teflon Chain-Saver Dry Self-Cleaning Lubricant

Don't fix it if it ain't broke, don't break it if you can't fix it.

You may laugh. I always use DID-428 O-ring chains on both bikes. Never lubed a chain in my life. I'd also question how much lubrication would reduce sprocket wear. Lubrication also attracts dust, silt and grime. If a sprocket's root circle and pitch diameter match a roller chain, little to no friction exists between chain and sprocket. That said, the pulling of the sprocket teeth against the roller will wear them. Is this friction, deformation or both?? Once that starts the root circle and pitch diameter change, increasing the wear. On the XT, the front sprocket is made from low carbon steel like an SAE 1018 grade. These wear out. I made rear sprockets (58 teeth) from 1045 medium carbon steel. After some 10k miles, no wear is evident. Been through a load of front sprockets, however.
