Is the FMF exhaust the best pipe for a 2014 XT250 or does somone recommend another one? Thanks

I don't have one, but many people here do...including Muniac (this Site's owner). My bikes all have the Z1 Mod, and gained some power there (for free). I suspect that can be done to certain models of the XT250, as well as my XT225s.
I can say that at idle and most other RPM ranges, Muniac's FMFs on two of his bikes, don't seem to be much louder than my Z1 mod; acceptable noise levels...

Mike - We have XT225s. One has the FMF power core and the other has the Pro Circuit T4. These exhaust systems come from the TTR-225 after market products. Both will fit on the XT225 without any modifications. You may need to deal with the spark arrestor screen in one or both exhaust systems. Can't remember the details on that.
You have an XT250. I don't know if its exhaust system is the same as that on the XT225. If it is, then the above remains relevant to your bike. These exhaust systems are louder than stock but not obnoxious IMHO. The FMF power core is a tad louder than the T4. You'll notice a slight increase in power. The bike may also run a bit leaner. An advantage for us given our higher elevation trail system here.

I have a 2012 XT 250 and I have the FMF Power Core 4. It runs fine with no rejetting. It did seem quite loud, so I got the Quiet Core Insert. That took the noise down a few db. The FMF is much lighter than stock, but for a 250, I did not notice any real power gain. At times when riding near homes I wish for the stock quiet muffler, but it does sound good. Does draw attention when you wind it out. So if I were to do it over again, I might reconsider changing the exhaust.

+1 on Yampols post.
I have the fmf powercore4 as well. I don't have the insert, but will try to get my hands on one to try it out. It's pretty noisy for no real gain.

I am not surprised. The XT225 was a somewhat stone age design, amenable to tuning tweaks. The XT250 is more highly optimized, and the most significant improvement of an after-market exhaust is probably weight reduction. Rule of thumb for motorcycles is that 7 pounds = 1 HP.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke, don't break it if you can't fix it.

No. There is a true HP gain with modified exhausts when tuned properly. Dyno curves do exist: 1-2 HP for the XTs. If your "Rule of Thumb" is accurate (and I question it!), it would have to apply by physics to ALL VEHICLES of any weight. Also, ROTATING mass acts also to "effectively steal" HP during acceleration, but the the equations are different. Alexd

XT225 or XT250? I have no doubts about exhaust improvements for the older model. "When tuned properly" is a major caveat.
Even more effective is shedding pounds from the rider....
I met a guy last weekend, about 6' tall, maybe 220 pounds, who used to race 250cc street bikes. He said there was this woman rider, who weighed about 100 pounds less, who would wave at him as she passed him on the same model motorcycle.

Yes. It seems pretty obvious that power-to-weight ratio must include the rider. This would obviously affect acceleration, and it seems quite logical that "top speed" might also be affected by greater wind resistance and road resistance. I've only just started riding my XT225, but I can tell you there is a very obvious difference in performance between taking my daughter (81 lbs) and taking my wife (125 lbs) as passengers. Really, very noticeable. Especially when fighting gravity. Whether your rule of thumb is accurate or not, I could surely stand to lose 21 pounds. If I gain the equivalent of 3 HP in the process, great. At least my bike won't sound obnoxious. If your rule of thumb is wrong, then hey, I'm still healthier.

There's no doubt whatsoever about F=MA with speeds much lower than the speed of light...and sizes greater than where quantum effects start showing up.
But that said, it's the numbers that I object to.
On average, I can get down the 1/4 mile Drag-Strip, almost one tenth of a second quicker, just with lighter wheels; a combination of lower total mass and lower rotating mass. (Car...3950 pounds with driver)
