My better half likes to plan our holidays well in advance.

Last year after a wind blown cruise around France,Spain and Portugal, she decided we should give the cruises a miss.

We have the loan of a caravan near Perpignan on the French/Spanish border for Easter, as we did last year, so we drive down for that, most likely with our Grandaughter again.

So for August( as Lyn is a Teacher we have to go school holidays), she fancies Italy.

Well Villa is booked, as is a return flight for one....

I get to ride down !!!

The Serow is out of the question, and the Transalp is getting a bit long in the tooth.

A new bike is to be purchased

Decisions decisions.

I fancy a Suzuki V-Strom 1000, we will have to see

watch this space.

Anybody fancy a Transalp?

How could you not ride the Transalp across the alps? Those things run forever. But if it's an excuse to buy a new bike... I'd fancy a Tiger 800 over the Strom.

What part of Italy? I've been to north/central Italy a couple times for a previous job and found it to be very nice. Looks to be an epic ride, we'll expect lots of pics. smile

Going near Lucca in Tuscany.

Bit more space on the strom, Im a bit lardy these days, and I think i'd prefer the lazier power delivery of a twin.

Funds available in a couple of months, I'll get some test rides near the time.

Hi Ben,

what a great position to be in!

A wonderful place to holiday.

A fabulous way to get there.

And funds available to buy a new toy!

It doesn't get better than this, so I'll be watching with keen interest to see how your decision making comes together.

Enjoy the experience.

Regards

Thanks Reggie.

Plan so far is to use the tunnel, stay the night near St Quentin, next night at Chamonix and through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, so 3 days for 1250 miles.

Sat nav to be decided upon, exiting car unit has no bluetooth or headphone socket for spoken directions, Iphone with navfree installed works ok, although did nearly deafen me the 1st time I tried it, radio in my helmet is turned off each time a direction is given, and has to be physically turned back on again. Radio only good below about 50mph (helmet is a v-can www.ghostbikes.com/products/11417-vcan-v...CFXHLtAodcyUA7A )
but can listen to music on the I-phone no problem, as it just mutes for directions.
Navfree is free for UK, France and Italy are just 1.99 each, but work seperatly, so no full route, re-route at the border.
Or spend the dosh on a garmin or tomtom.

Hi Pete
I haven't got the funds for a GS, as I want a brand new bike, and 9k is about top of my budget. v-strom with adventure pack comes in just right.

When are you venturing out with the TRF again? I'm out on sunday, going to be cold.

Hi Ben - unfortunately no plans for the TRF in the next year or so, family stuff fills the week-ends but am sure in the future will get back to it sometime.
I understand your budget adn desire for something new - I like all my old bikes but at times need much fettling and would like a new one. Went to the NEC bike show in November and had a free ride out on the Yamaha MT-09 which was fun and also the MT-07 which at just over 5,800 (including ABS) sounds like a bargain. A few years ago I had a go on the Kawa Versys and the Suzuki V Strom and the new versions look good, but I suppose too similar to your Transalp perhaps. The 1,000 cc V strom sounds like a good all-round bike.

Hi Ben,

Any progress/test rides or you leaving them 'til weather improves a tad? The Transalp is a popular bike in Italy, seen more of them than Ducati's.

Looking forward to hearing more about your trip. You got me at it now, I've booked 2 trips, we're going via Hull/Zeebrugge but planned nowt as to where we're going, 'tis usually Italy we end up though.

Couple of years ago we went down via Lux, Black forest (B500), & interlaken, plan was to ride the passes past the Eiger & Matterhorn but snow stopped play, mid June!

Corsica is worth a trip over, especially the west side. We got a ferry (4 hour trip) from Livorno, not far from your destination of Lucca.

Are you B&B'ing on route or camping?
