I think the width of the |--| corresponds to the cam lobe dwell at TDC. Anywhere in there is fine. If yours made lots of noise, you probably were one rev off from TDC when you did the valves. Both valves have clearance at TDC on the compression/power stroke. You should feel the resistance when approaching it. If only 1 valve has clearance, rotate the crank 1 more full revolution and check again.
