So I just got around to the Carb Mixture Screw plug removal and had no issue. Mine had been set at 2 turns and now sits at 2 1/2 turns. My question is simply this...I am still way under warranty and want your opinion on opening up the exhaust as is mentioned a few places. These would likely be the only two mods for a good long while if they are worth it. And hopefully the exhaust noise level doesn't increase to much...Anyone have some thoughts on this?

I have no knowledge of the XT250, other than a few obvious things such as that it uses a different carb than the XT225.
As to the Z1 mod...I'm GUESSING the muffler is the same or similar enough that it would work. If so, I would advise no more than 1" hole. I use about a 7/8" hole reamed with a step drill; myself, I find the extra noise quite acceptable.

But in the interests of full disclosure, I use my bike 90% off-road, and I've never noticed a SIGNIFICANT increase of noise by the removal of the "snorkel" from the air-box, though some other people find even this extra (?) noise objectionable.

Hi Robert,

if it was me, I'd be leaving the exhaust alone until the warranty period was over as you never know what excuses big corporations will use to wriggle out of liability.

I was happy with the plug removal alone on my XT250.

I opened up mine before the warranty was up. I was actually dumb enough to buy the extended warranty. My bike has never been back to the dealership since I took ownership, and no one has done any work on her but me.

To open up yours, is purely up to you. If you do decide to do it, you can be like me, and remove the exhaust from the bike to drill the baffle. I did it just as an extra precaution to make sure no shavings would get into anything....cool

Welcome, I'm one of the new sherpa lurkers, I'm enjoying the heck out of the 250 dual sport but understand what you mean about missing the big twin.
I still kinda miss the rumble

but not for long

Hey Dragon.. hit me up when you think you might want to go out on a ride. I have a buddy here in Portland that also rides a sherpa and we know a few good places to go. Need to head up to Rogers/Browns camp one of these days before the weather changes.

Thanks for all the help everybody! I removed the muffler and drilled out a nice 1 1/8 hole, (I happened to have this sized hole saw). It took a little bit to get it done, I must say. Cleaned it all up and reinstalled. With the carb screw mod and this uncork of the exhaust, I feel a noticeable improvement through the gears and response to throttle. The increase in exhaust noise was minimal, of course I used to have "Big Shots" on my Harley, so I might not be the best judge here. Very happy with the two mods and will leave it at that until warranty is up. Sure am happy with the XT250!

Good to know that the Z1 mod worked well on your XT250 Robert. I don't believe such a exhaust mod will have any effect on your bike's warranty. The 2006 XT225 I ride had it's exhaust mod done at the California dealership where the bike was originally sold, so it would seem that it's pretty much a non-issue.

will do, I just went out to diamond mill and browns camp Friday.

I saw two other bikes total at diamond mill
It was my first time there, and I got in a bit over my head on some of the trails.

You know, that kinda of, whoops this was a mistake, when you are half way up the hill and the bike is bouncing all over.

So I went back to browns camp (I can do OK on all the medium trails as long as I keep the speed down) and it was full of bikes, and mud. I met two groups of five on one trail alone, so I headed home.

I usually try to get to browns camp on a weekday, and have it all to myself. grin

I have no idea where I am going out there, so I'd love to ride with someone who knows the trail.

I'll try to put my cell # in my profile somewhere and we'll hook up for a ride.
(I'm coming from Oregon City, so I have some slabbing to do before I get there)
