Okay, I know you guys are probably tired of me by now but I was curious if it was normal for the xt 225 to have about a quarter inch of vertical play in the swingarm?
Like say the bike is on the stand, the whole wheel will move about a quarter inch along with the swingarm before the shock begins to compress. Are you guys' bikes like this?

Sorry for all the posts :P

Maybe a little less than a quarter inch on mine, but it was about one half an inch when i put a new bushing in it.
These things have bushings instead of roller bearings so there will be some play. The best thing to do is grease it often. The bushing in the middle of the rocker seems to wear the most , that's the one I replaced.
Not sure about others wear , I'm sure someone else will chime in.
I stand on the left of the bike and pull it towards me up on the side stand with the wheel up then lean over and grab the swingarm to check the play.

That sounds like a bit much to me, though my bike isn't handy at the moment for a comparison. How much does it move left/right?

I can't find any play in mine. I have a centerstand, and with the bike on the centerstand, when I lift up on the rear wheel there is no play. I suspect you have some wear in the shock pivots or in the linkage or swingarm pivot. You can get aftermarket swingarm pivots with needle bearings in them from Rocky Mountain ATV. How many miles on the bike? I heard Scott say their bikes had noticeable wear in the linkage at only 10,000 miles, and after watching videos of the way they ride I can believe it. I have a fairly expensive aftermarket rear shock and spring which came with new pivot bolts. But my swing arm pivot and linkage are still stock. I've never really pounded on it though. I'm a very conservative trail rider. Is there any side to side play in the swingarm? Some wear is going to happen with hard use. MX bikes require constant suspension work. To get a better idea just how much play there is, you might want to lift the bike up on a milk crate or bike stand, so you can use both hands to check it.

The above is my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

It has 3000 miles on it now, it had 1700 when I got it. It sat in a garage most of it's life. It doesn't have any side to side play, Just a little bit of up and down. I may have to pull it apart and inspect the linkage and pivot? I have a good idea of what the linkage should look like. Or even pivots in the shock? haha. I'll have to just take it all apart and see what I'm working with

Is it moving at the pivot or at the shock mounts?

If it has only 3000 miles on it (mine has 22000+) unless those were some really rough miles, you should be ok. Mine might have had some play in it when I first got it with 1800 miles, before I put the Works Performance shock and 8.1kg spring on it. What is your shock preload set to?

To be honest the movement is so small, I can't really tell where the movement is coming from. :P

Okay, I just had it on the stand and the only thing that seems to have play is the linkage. I'm pretty sure that's my issue right now.. I probably rode it about 1k miles before greasing it so that may have done some noticeable wear smirk Oh well as I have a replacement linkage for parts that's good.

I just stuck my fingers in all the points I thought may have play and the linkage was the only spot, if there's a better way to do this let me know smile
The slop was very noticeable I'm almost certain that's my problem.

I'm thinking about starting to take it apart but I'm a little nervous honestly.

So I'm about to do this but just wanna know before I do it, I've really been overthinking it.
Do I just take the tire off, remove the bolt from the shock, and then remove the bolt connecting the swingarm to the frame and then the whole swingarm comes off?
If it's really this easy I been waaaaay overthinking it putting it off..
