Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum, and I have searched all through the posts here and other places trying to learn more about getting a replacement shock spring for my 1994 xt225.
I weigh about 200lbs, and when I sit on the bike, I use up most of the available travel. I tried adding as much preload as I could (1.8" from the mount) and it made no difference.
I've been trying to find a stiffer replacement spring that won't break the bank. I have seen cogent dynamics mentioned, as well as works suspension, but I don't think I'm ready to spend $700 on a new shock.
I was hoping I could find a similar sized spring from a different bike that would fit an support my weight better. I've seen some people talk about swapping in a shock from a tt225, but then seen other people say they did that and it made no difference.
If my shock is fine, and I just need a stronger spring, could i get a spring from a xt350, or something like that, and swap them? I've found the measurements of the 225 springs, but haven't found specs in the 350 springs. is there any changes between the shocks in the 94 like mine, to more recent years? would a spring from a newer model do the trick? or from a xt 250? or those any beefier?
Just looking for some definitive answers from anyone who has swapped springs, or get pointed in the right direction for where to look for more info.

Thanks!

I do not know for sure ,but have heard that a TTR 225 spring is a bit stronger.
Good luck finding something.

In this thread, everyone seems to pretty much agree that the TTR 225 shock is a direct fit, and a stiffer spring, but I read other threads where people said they didn't notice a difference. http://www.xt225.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=76956&page=1

That made me wonder about using the same shock, and swapping the spring with a spring from a XT250, XT350, or something else that would be a slightly heavier or bigger bike with a stronger spring, but a similar suspension setup and spring size.
I'm just having trouble verifying the dimensions on a lot of these springs, so I might start just buying the cheapest ones on ebay and seeing what fits. I see some xt350 shocks that are less than $50, so I might give that a try first.

I doubt that the spring from anything else would fit the XT225, except maybe something from the TTR-225 or TTR-230. They are basically the off road version of the XT225. I may have a complete stock shock for an XT225 somewhere. I replaced mine with a $700 Works Performance shock with an 8.1 kg/mm spring designed to handle my 240 pounds. The stock shock just didn't do it. The rear suspension was completely bottoming out.

The above is my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

That's the same problem I'm having, just sitting on it nearly bottoms it out, and I was hoping that I would be able to carry a smaller passenger on the back for short distances on streets. Definitely not on the stock spring... I may need to go the route of getting one of the 8.1 kg springs I've ben hearing about.

Jerry, do you happen to know if Works Performance sells the springs separately from the fancy shock, or can you only get them as a package? And is that company still around? I thought I read something about the owner passing away a few years ago.

I emailed Cogent today about springs and they said they had a 7.2kg in stock, but I'm not sure if that would be strong enough.

If you install a much stiffer spring on the stock shock, the rebound damping will no longer be adequate. It could top out and try to buck you off the seat on big bumps.

I would not go with anything less than the 8.1 spring. But peejman is right, the stock shocks damping will not be adequate. Works Performance did go out of business, but was reopened by the original owners daughter as Worx Shocks. I got my Works Performance shock/spring over 12 years ago, from ProCycle. They are now selling the Cogent Dynamics shock/spring. But they are not cheap. Around $750, which is a lot of money to spend on an XT225, but it depends on what you want. There were no other dual sport bikes I liked. And there is really no other way to go to make it handle more weight. Surprisingly, the XT225 owners manual list the load capacity at 398 pounds. But it certainly will not handle that with the stock suspension.

I hadn't thought about that. it does seem like by rebound dampening does still work really well though, if I crank it all the way up it takes about 10 seconds to fully rebound, so hopefully I can find a happy medium.
Well, I will most likely either get a spring from cogent, or a TTR225 shock, just trying to learn a bit more first.
