Thanks for the kind words! I actually did get my asking price, thankfully. And thanks to everyone for being such a friendly, helpful community. I’m going with something a little bigger next. I’m thinking a Kawasaki KLR 650 will be interesting to try. Cheers.

I've never owned a KLR-650, but I rode one some years back and decided it was much too big a bike in every way for my day to day riding. I had a KLR-250 for a short while. Overall it was a decent fit, but the lack of an electric starter got the best of me and I went back to an XT225.

The largest bike I've owned was the specialty built '57 BSA 650 Spitfire Scrambler I purchased from Buddy Stubbs, the BSA dealer in Phoenix, in '58.

Rode it for some time then lost it in a T-bone crash in front of a drive in theater in Phoenix one evening with me aboard. Luckily I survived but the hot rodded engine stuck full throttle and literally blew itself apart. Still have a piece of one of the pistons from that engine that I suspend on a cord outside as a 'Cowboy Weather Device'.

Anyway, glad you got your asking price for your XT225. Good ones are harder to come by than hen's teeth these days, so no sense not getting the max for one if you're going to sell it.

Best of luck coming up with the slightly larger bike you're looking for. Let us know what you settle on when that day arrives!..

i've had a 2000 (gen1) klr for several years and have really enjoyed it. not great at any one thing but, in the right hands, capable of almost anything. huge aftermarket, used and community support. i went farkle crazy on mine and probably spent what it's worth on accessories over the years. great fun on pavement, broken crappy pavement and light off road. i added an '05 xt225 for that.

there are several problem areas to be aware of, however;

the balancer chain adjuster (doohickey).

oil burning issues if ridden above 5k rpm for long periods (piston ring lands can break - well known fix is the 685 big bore kit, eagle mike sells a good one)

there's no coolant bypass, this can lead to the cylinder wearing out of round and lead to oil burning issues as well (thermobob is the fix)

have i talked you out of one yet?

seriously, there are those who've tended to none of these issues and ridden thousands of miles. there are enough who haven't that these are well documented fixes.

mine's currently in pieces, the small end of my rod decided it no longer wanted to hang onto the piston. i've only heard of 2 other similar failures. i rode the snot out of mine.

Hey PTXYZ,

Thanks for the info. You haven't scared me off! As a matter of fact about half the bikes I'm seeing listed come with those mods plus many more farckles added on. So, I'm being discriminating and trying to settle on one already set up the way I want it.

That really stinks. Nuked the engine and the frame.

When the engine blew you were fortunate it didn't create the kind of chaos that could have had disastrous results, not just for the bike but for you riding it. Easy to see you've gotta be doing 80'ish riding in traffic like that. Even the video has pucker factor baked into it. Scary, frustrating, and not something you'd ever want to have happen again. Glad it wasn't worse than it was, which was bad enough as is..

Re: 07 XT225 for sale - 07/17/21 10:32 PM

I've had 2 first gen KLR650s. I'd probably still have one but they are too tall for me to ride anymore. I fixed the balancer chain tensioner (doohickey) and replaced the rear sub frame bolts. Yes they will burn some oil if pushed hard. Make sure the engine is completely full of oil, carry extra, and check it at every gas stop. I had various accessories on mine. The biggest and most expensive mistake I made was a Corbin seat. Went back to stock and sold the new Corbin for half what I paid for it. Corbin seats suck. But the stock seat is none too comfortable either. Just like the XT225, the seat seems to be the KLRs biggest weak point. One accessory I put on both was a bolt on centerstand. I wouldn't leave the driveway without one. You can get one for either generation KLR at https://www.happy-trail.com I have never ridden the second gen (2008 and up) KLR, it looks more suited for road use than off road. The KLR has a couple of other issues that are worth mentioning. It is liquid cooled, and the cooling system can be damaged from dropping it, leaving you stranded. It also has shim type valve adjustment, fortunately it is shim over bucket, so you can replace the shims without pulling the cams.

Another bike I would consider is the Suzuki DR650. I've never had one, but it is a lot simpler than the KLR. No balancer chain tensioner or subframe issues, air cooled, screw and locknut valve adjustment, aftermarket centerstand is available, and while the tank is smaller than the KLR, larger aftermarket tanks are available. I'm assuming it has the same seat issues as any other "modern" dual sport.

I had one and loved it. I will readily admit that the DR650 is not for everyone. And compared to KTM's it's a sled. But it's also bullet proof. Like the early XT's they are very simple machines, they just keep running and running in spite of poor maintenance. I have read where some folks have tinkered with them to make them real performance machines. The one thing I did do to my DR650 was add a lowering kit. It changes the handling characteristics just a bit, buy being short I like being able to get my feet down.

In fact, when I changed back to a dual sport MC the DR650 was my preferred choice. I like the extra interstate capable power. But I went back to the XT250 because my wife can ride it. While I can get the XT up to 70mph indicated (about 65 actual) it is screaming at me, so not practical for long interstate riding. The XT's lighter weight is much more practical on trails. There are no right answers only decisions to be made.
