Looking to see if this has happened before.

A buddy borrowed my 05 225 and while he was following me On the freeway the kickstart blanking plug blew out which relocated all the internal engine oil externally! He rode for another 500 yards or so (not mechanically minded) before shutting down though.

I haven't torn into the motor yet but intend to replace the plug and do a compression check first.

Looking for opinions on what happened. Do these plugs get loose and fall out or perhaps a rise in crankcase pressure blew it out?

Hi BondBMW,

I have never heard of this happening on any make of motorcycle, never mind a Yammy.

Hmmm. Oh dear! I'll source another plug and see what's gone on then.

Weird I know. It's definatly the plug that went though. He even remembers feeling something hit his foot. Got the part on order now along with oil filters etc so I guess I'll see if any damage was caused.

Just a guess, but I doubt that it lost enough oil in the 500 yards to do much if any damage. Just probably an oily right leg and bike.

Hopefully there won't be damage, but there's really not much oil in an XT. It is also the weirdest thing I've heard of.

I am putting a new plug in this side cover. Seems like pressing it in will not be strong enough. This has to be glued? Anyone have any experience with this. Thanks!

No idea if it's required, but you could use a little retaining compound. I'd look at Loctite 648.

Thanks peejman. I read about Loctite 648 and it looks like its for metal to metal. This plug is hard rubber.
