Good day from Australia to everyone. Picked up a new 08 XT250 a week ago and so far love it. Never owned a legendary 225 so can't compare, but since our small group of sedate bush riders ride a lot of tight single track and tricky hills in the Coffs Harbour hinterland, this bike is soo much easier to handle than the old DR650. The light weight and low seat height makes me feel a lot more capable in the the trickier stuff.

I was a bit suprised though to find out the air filter is paper and not foam. Does anyone out there have the 08 model and if so have you had any fine dust problems with the filter or done any modifications such as convert to foam or use some sought of filter sock cover?

Welcome to the site John, from a fellow 250 owner. There are a few of us in the UK. Now it's on sale in the US though I think we'll get to see plenty, pretty soon.

Hi John,

I've had no problems with dust on mine and have covered 62,000km so far.

Welcome to the madhouse.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Hi Reggie,

Thats a lot of km's. Do you do much off road? The owners manual says change air filter every 40,000km and more often if riding dirt. How often do you change your filter? Also did your XT lossen up a bit in the higher gears after running in? We have fairly strict emmission rules in Australia, did you do anything to derestrict the exhaust?

welcome.
Im in Sydney and have had mine for 800ks.Its a top little bike. The only issue I have with it is that it does not have a standard bash plate.Getting an after market one is not an option. Genuine are only available from Jaapn through a buyers network. Yamaha Australia have already stated that they will not be supporting genuine optionals for this model.

The bike is loosening up. You will notice this as revs start to increase over time and require adjusting as the ring seats to the bore.
I have not had an issue with the filter yet and have had a few deep water crossings.

It is due for its first service in a week or 2 and will get them to report on its condition.

The 250 is easy to make a bash plate for if you're happy with just protecting the bottom of the engine and frame rails. I've bent a piece of 3mm ally plate and picked up the threads that are already there. It looks ok but you don't notice it's there really. Make one out of cardboard first.

Hi John,

I do loads of road riding, along with regular gentle trails.

My home service schedule's

250km lubricate chaain
1,500km oil change
3,000km oil & filter change
6,000km valve clearance (only adjusted once so far!)
12,000km spark plug
24,000km air filter

Seems to have worked so far!

As for the lean set up, can I suggest you turn out the air screw by about 2 1/4 turns. Leave the exhaust alone. You'll find easier starting and quicker off the choke!

The bike does loosen off by quite a bit and is a fabulous machine. You'll love it!

I also made a bash plate from alloy checker plate, by making a cardboard template. Doc's is a subtle little number, where as mine's more on the OTT side!

John C...

Welcome to the site. We are getting more and more XT250 owners on here. As "Chartman", I'm sure the aftermarket companies are in the works on making an air filter....

XT08....

Soon there will be a bash plate for it, here in the States. I do believe that TurboTom is in the works on making racks and other stuff for it....

Welcome to the site John. I have only done about 650miles so far on my 07 250, but most of that is trail riding, some of it quite hard. Here in north wales a bash plate is a must. Mine came off my old CRM250 and fits fine, I must however cut a hole to line up with the sump drain as I had to remove it for the service. If it had not fitted I would have done what Reggie and Doc did and made my own.
